Tourette's

Tourette's Syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by repetitive, involuntary movements or vocalisations known as tics. These can manifest as simple tics, such as blinking or throat clearing, or more complex behaviours, like jumping or uttering phrases.

For individuals with Tourette's syndrome, these tics can significantly impact daily life and social interactions, often leading to feelings of embarrassment, anxiety, or frustration. The unpredictable nature of tics can create additional stress for both those affected and their families, as they navigate the challenges of living with this condition.

Diagnosis of Tourette’s is usually attained from your GP, neurologist, psychiatrist, or a doctor who specialises in brain and behaviour, ruling out other causes.

Whilst there is no cure for Tourette’s syndrome, most children with tics find they can significantly improve or disappear altogether as they move into their early 20's. However, some people find their tics continue or worsen in adulthood.

Tics are associated with other diagnoses, such as ADHD, OCD, anxiety and depression.
