Thrive Psychological Services
We offer psychological treatment for Insomnia and Sleep disorder using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (this is referred to as CBT-I). This offer of treatment entails several components.
Assessment
The initial step in our process involves conducting a thorough assessment. This assessment will incorporate various screening methods, alongside a sleep diary that you will be required to complete. The sleep diary serves two primary functions: it helps you track your sleep patterns and it provides essential data for the assessment, while also offering a tool for ongoing monitoring of your sleep habits.
Intervention - preparation
Following the assessment, we will commence the intervention phase. This will include education about sleep, an understanding of stimulus control, and activity activation, which involves regulating sleep timings. We will furnish you with detailed information about sleep and how lifestyle factors influence it, allowing you to comprehend the reasons behind your sleep issues. This stage also encompasses behavioural aspects related to sleep, particularly how to intentionally limit time spent in bed to enhance sleep pressure and overall sleep efficiency.
Intervention - active
Once you have a grasp of these concepts, we will proceed to implement active interventions. This phase typically spans 6 to 12 weeks and involves cognitive restructuring, challenging negative beliefs, relaxation techniques, and behavioural modifications. We will meet regularly to help you identify and confront negative thoughts about sleep, provide strategies to address these thoughts, and foster a more realistic and positive approach to sleep. Additionally, we will teach relaxation tools to prepare you for bedtime and support you in making necessary adjustments to your sleep routines. The effectiveness of these changes will be monitored through the sleep diaries and self-reported data.
The rationale behind this multifaceted approach is grounded in its proven long-term effectiveness. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is recognised as a highly effective treatment for insomnia, often producing lasting benefits even after the therapy has concluded. Unlike sedative medications, CBT-I addresses the root causes of insomnia rather than perpetuating dependence on drugs. Most importantly, this process empowers you by equipping you with coping mechanisms and a comprehensive understanding of sleep-related issues. This knowledge will enable you to manage sleep challenges effectively, should they arise in the future.
