Dr JoyAnne MacInnes is our lead clinician and an NHS Consultant Clinical Health Psychologist with vast experience across many physical and mental health conditions. Her primary aim is to assist patients to flourish and to live fulfilling lives. To this end, she utilises a range of evidence-based clinical models, following the guidelines established by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
With nearly 30 years of experience in the National Health Service (NHS), Dr MacInnes has held the position of Consultant lead for several psychology services in some of the UK's largest hospitals.
She has considerable expertise in the psychology related to both physical and mental health, catering to both paediatric and adult populations.
Her work includes extensive engagement with individuals facing health challenges, particularly those recovering from injuries and surgeries, where she aims to reduce the emotional toll of such experiences on self-image and overall well-being.
Dr MacInnes is also well-versed in supporting individuals who struggle with managing their responses in various situations. Her experience encompasses a range of conditions such as tics, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and overcontrol issues. Additionally, she provides specialised therapy for adults and children dealing with trauma, especially trauma related to medical procedures. Her support extends to individuals whose health concerns, whether acute or chronic, negatively impact their quality of life.
In her role as Head of NHS Psychology Services within Child Development Centres and Adult Mental Health Clinics, JoyAnne gained profound knowledge in the neurodiversity assessment process, focusing on improving patient experience during diagnosis. Furthermore, she conducts psychological assessments for individuals seeking dental, medical, or surgical interventions, such as orthognathic treatment, risk-reducing mastectomy, and cosmetic surgery.
Dr MacInnes holds a BSc Honours in Psychology from the University of Sheffield, a DPhil in Health Psychology from the University of Oxford, and a Clinical Psychology Doctorate from Royal Holloway, University of London. She is also trained and proficient in various psychological models and techniques, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP).
